Robotics and the human element: The future of container terminal operations on Maasvlakte II

The state-of-the-art container terminal of the future will have a high degree of automation. Such a terminal is currently being built in Rotterdam (Netherlands) on Maasvlakte II. Maasvlakte II covers an area of 2,000ha which was built into the North Sea (see Figure 1). Besides other cargo terminals and logistics operations, there are altogether three container terminals planned on that area.
